The Madison Athletic Training Student Association (MATSA) was established in order to fill the need for a campus organization which aids in the enrichment of knowledge and the advancement of the athletic training profession. The goals of MATSA are three-fold:

  • Academic Goal: To promote the growth of knowledge, stay abreast of current trends, and help students stay informed about educational requirements in the athletic training profession.
  • Social Goal: To bring together individuals within the JMU community interested in the field of athletic training.
  • Professional Goal: To provide members with the opportunity to interact with local health professionals and to gain knowledge of the athletic training field through attending conventions, lectures, and other group activities.

The executive board consists of the President, Vice president of Outreach, Vice President of Innovations, Secretary, Treasurer, Special Events Coordinator, and Alumni Connection Officer. Officers are elected at the end of each Spring semester for service in the following academic year. Along with the executive board, a faculty/staff advisor serves as a consultant and aids in the guidance of the organization.

MATSA is open to any JMU student who has an interest in learning more about the athletic training profession or other related field. Past activities have included a Mentor/Mentee program, an alumni database, Relay for Life, community service, picnics, and various exciting fundraisers. Meetings are held four times a month in the Engineering & GeoSciences Building. Dues are paid for the full year ($40) or by the semester ($25).
